Can somebody tell me what "withers" are? That's referenced in the neck, topline, and body section of the standards. Even if Lucy's withers are totally the wrong size, she's such a sweet puppy and I love her very much. It's good to be a dog mom.

Dogs on Thursday
Here's the pup, looking so cute. I have been a dog mom for a year now, as of July 28. I am still fascinated by Lucy...how smart she is, how beautiful, how loyal.
I've got to admit about being confused by some things too. For instance, look at the tip of her tail. I call this long hair that grows out of the end her "tail tuft". Is this normal for a yellow Lab? If she were a show dog, would this count against her? Luckily her only job is to be a family pet.
Here's another view of the tail tuft.
Sometimes I read the AKC breed standards for Labrador Retrievers. I like this part: The most distinguishing characteristics of the Labrador Retriever are ...its "kind," friendly eyes, expressing character, intelligence and good temperament.

Not an expert, so take it for what it's worth:
1) I think the tail tuft is natural for shorter haired dogs, and I don't think it would be a mark off in the show ring
2) withers are generally speaking the shoulder blade height area; if the dog is standing and you hold a yardstick against its front leg, the withers are sort of where the topline is (now I could be completely wrong here, but I am correct at least in how to measure the dog's height :-)
The tail tuft is normal. If you plan to show her you can trim it if it bothers you. The judge would not fault her for that. The withers are the shoulders. You measure height from the floor to the withers. Stand her next to a yardstick.
Labs are great dogs, perfect for a first dog.
Cute pics! All of our dogs get tail tufts... esp when shedding.
Lucy is a cutie and takes such nice pictures!! Wilbur & Charlotte have tail tufts too...I just twist them when I'm playing with their tails...they get used to it. :)
Kathy...and what a beautiful baby you have...she's a precioud lab!!!
Lucy sure takes nice pics!!!
Glad to meet you Lucy and Kathy!
I did one of those quizes to see what dog you'd be and I'm a Labrador Retriever! So after seeing Lucy, I'm proud!
Isn't it wonderful to have someone to love? And what a sweet doggy you have.
Oh Lucy is very sweet!
Elise says that tufts on the tail is a sign of intelligence!
It is good to be a dog mom! Lucy is a sweetie!
She's a very fine dog. There's simply no doubt about it and you're a very fine dog mom. I still can't believe I have a dog and, to think, I thought they were too high maintenance. I can't imagine not having Coal.
